On December 14th at 6pm at Providence College, RI_ACDA and the Providence College Music Department will be sponsoring the “Meet in the Middle” Concert.
The “Meet in the Middle “ project is a diversity initiative sponsored by the RI American Choral Directors Association, Barrington Music Parents Association and the Music Education Association of North Smithfield. This project gives students from various backgrounds the chance to work together collaboratively on music in preparation for a group performance. The “Meet in the Middle” project seeks to have high school students “meet in the middle” philosophically, geographically, and musically. This project united Barrington, North Smithfield, Central and Mount Pleasant High schools students to create both a band and a chorus which will perform at Providence College on Dec. 14th at 6pm.
The goal of the “Meet in the Middle “ Project is to give teens from across the state an opportunity to learn about each other, to celebrate differences and to embrace similarities. These students have used music as the common factor and have embraced each others culture, and learned from each others uniqueness. We have had four rehearsals which consisted of singing, playing and dancing.
I encourage you to take the time to attend this FREE concert. It is less than an hour but I assure you it will be memorable and moving. Barbara Hughes, Celeste Labonte, Danielle Lucini , Joyce Bernau Enriquez and I have had the pleasure of working together on this project and both the students and teachers have learn a great deal.

On September 24th, Providence College and RI_ACDA co-sponsored an In-Service Workshop for Choral Directors from 9:30am-1:30pm at the Providence College Smith Center for the Arts, as well as an All-State Prep day for students planning to audition for the RIMEA All-State this November.
Hello everyone, I hope your summer is going well. I am excited for another year of RI-ACDA events and would like to have a more formal process for the board this year. Please see our Leadership page here for our list of officers for the 2015-17 term.
As of right now, I feel that these are the roles that best serve our RI community. If we should see the need for more sub categories, I am very willing to ask more people to participate on the board.
- Reach out to inner city choirs by connecting them with college students studying to be conductors/teachers, giving both a chance to learn from each other.
- CONTINUE the workshops offered throughout the year.
Our first workshop is scheduled for Sept. 24th, with Dr. Lisa Graham giving a presentation. Jeff Kerr and Susan Hodgins will also present.
- The first ever RI ACDA HS Honor Choir performance with the University of Rhode Island Chorus and Warwick Symphony Orchestra.
- A Community Choir/Church Choir event – TBD
That is all for now! I look forward to working with you all and thank you for your dedication to choral music in RI
